Claude Bigras has spent his career in the construction, janitorial, and facility maintenance industry since 1982. He joined GDI in 1994, and after many years serving in various positions, he assumed the role of President and CEO in 2004. Read the exclusive WFBSC Executive Insight interview with Claude below.
Why did you decide to join WFBSC?
I found it was important to broaden my horizons by connecting with follow trade executives and learn about what is happening in our industry all over the world. I was driven to learn about how things are done in other places, and have the opportunity to meet our associated industry participants ( suppliers, etc.) during trade show events.
What has been the most rewarding part of serving on WFBSC’s Board of Directors?
I've been able to meet great people and gain a better understanding about the industry structure, as well as be part of a group that invests time for the industry to professionnalised it as it is very fragmented and not recognized to its real value.
Can you discuss your hopes for the organization?
I hope our organization will take its place in the industry as a major leader in sharing best practices, elevating the global awareness, as well as strategic knowledge. The Association has to continue to provide valuable education and deliver quality events for its members.
In the next 10-15 years, where do you see the BSC industry, specifically on a global scale?
There have been significant industry changes in the last 30 years. More and more, large scale BSCs are becoming facility operators with multi-service offerings, providing extensive technology to support our business processes. Robotics (at some point) will become key elements of our performance in the future. Those tools will enable us to stay financially attractive to our customers. Additionally, competition will always be a driver of pricing.
How do you create a great company culture for your employees?
Lead by example. Focus on promoting values and create moments in your day-to-day life around those values. It's important to also encourage team work and build a strong company culture that you can continuously nurture.
What is the best piece of advice you have received throughout your career?
Work hard to gain more expertise. Remember, people will emulate you so be aware of how you act around your team. People are the essence of our business and should be treated with the upmost respect. Business is all about the people--your customers, your employees and your stakeholders. Again, you get out of it what you put into it. Strive for profits, but also aim to be the best leader you can be and the rewards will be great.
